ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Cultural Connections through the Arts focuses on dispelling myths about different cultures and traditions in our local, national and global communities by creating a unique opportunity for students to interact with local, national and international artists in professional master classes and residencies. The goal of Cultural Connections through the Arts is to foster understanding and friendships among the students from varying cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.

WHO WE HELP

This long-standing flagship program of Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts focuses on middle and high school students, and offers a dual-faceted program consisting of a high school dance master class program and a multi-grade residency program. Both the dance master class and the residency program serve to empower students with skills for problem solving and conflict resolution, self-esteem and mutual respect.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Cultural Connections through the Arts helps to break down social and cultural barriers by bringing students together from across the Valley to participate in various arts activities while engaging them in an open and interactive conversation about diversity.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

A Celebration of the Arts for Children with Disabilities is an annual event offering a safe, friendly and artistic environment for elementary-aged children with various classifications of disabilities to create art and be together in a fun and festive outdoor setting. Held each November, this celebratory event offers unique performances, workshops and art projects designed for various ranges of abilities and cognition. Dedicated staff members and volunteers work to ensure the students’ safety as they unload and load buses, traverse the park, attend art workshops and eat lunch at this exciting half-day event. There is no cost to participate.

WHO WE HELP

Thanks to the incredible support of 150+ volunteers and staff members, more than 500 students from area special education classes have the opportunity to exercise their imaginations and explore their creativity at this very popular and eagerly anticipated event.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Art therapy is based on the belief that the creative process helps individuals develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and selfawareness, resolve conflicts and achieve insight. As children with special needs struggle with learning disabilities, emotional challenges and sense of self-worth, the arts provide them with a place where they can shine.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts’ education department works closely with staff at Paiute Neighborhood Center and Vista del Camino Community Center to provide artist residencies to introduce youngsters to artistic experiences through theater games, movement, creative writing, music and visual arts, and to further enhance students after-school and summer programs. Additionally, students take part in Empty Bowls, a community-wide project which raises funds to support the Vista del Camino food bank.

WHO WE HELP

Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts’ education department brings in artists to work with youth of all ages in several disciplines, including theater, movement, song writing, drawing, music history, sculpture and more.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Affiliated with the National Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning, the nation’s premier provider of early-childhood education, Arizona Wolf Trap brings art into the lives of children in Head Start and other pre-school programs. The premise behind the Wolf Trap Program is that music, movement and creative drama are powerful teaching strategies to help children master a variety of skills such as language development, concentration, self-discipline, memory, verbalization and positive self-image.

The centerpiece of the Wolf Trap program is the classroom residency, comprised of 14 sessions in which professional Wolf Trap-approved performing artists and early-childhood educators collaborate to translate instructional goals into drama, music and movement experiences designed to meet classroom objectives.

WHO WE HELP

Each year, Arizona Wolf Trap partners with 70+ pre-school classrooms creating opportunities for more than 1,500 children to experience the energy and excitement of the arts delivered through classroom residencies and special field trips to the Herberger Theater and Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Incorporating arts education into the classroom improves the social, emotional and cognitive skills of pre-school children. Research shows that children who experience and participate in the multi-sensory experiences delivered through the arts experience the following lifelong benefits:

  • Greater self-esteem
  • Better learning comprehension skills
  • Higher motivation to achieve academic success

For disadvantaged children, physical, visual or tactile learning experiences are considered an essential element of the language curriculum.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

I take a buffalo stance
As it storms in my heart
The rain of thousands of years
Pours within the genes of
A single brother
A single sister
Cries to me for survival
— student, Salt River High School

Art for Art’s Sake is an ongoing program and artist residency at Salt River High School and produced in collaboration with the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. Art for Art’s Sake classes fill a void in the school’s own offerings and expose students to different expressions and cultural approaches to art. Culminating experiences for these students have taken place at an end-of-the year tribal awards ceremony, permanent installation of visual artwork at the high school or a public exhibition at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. In 2011, final art and poetry were presented at the end-of-year education showcase.

WHO WE HELP

Art for Art’s Sake provides 7th and 8th graders at Salt River High School the opportunity to create and experience the arts.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Kennedy Center Partners in Education is a collaborative partnership between arts centers and school districts designed to increase the artistic literacy of young people. Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts partners with the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community’s education department, the Paradise Valley Unified School District and the Higley School District to provide quarterly workshops for educators to teach techniques on incorporating the arts across the curriculum.

WHO WE HELP

The Kennedy Center Partners in Education program is based on the belief that the professional development of teachers is an essential component of any effort to increase the artistic literacy of young people. The goals of the partnership are to:

  • Increase teachers’ engagement with making and thinking about the arts
  • Influence participants’ teaching practice and understanding of arts ideas, content and concepts
  • Provide tools and strategies for implementing the Arizona Arts Standards in daily classroom curriculum
